Between October 28 and October 31, members of the Board of Education visited nine school communities under consideration for consolidation and closure. These visits offered valuable insights into each school's unique strengths, needs, and challenges. From the visit, four thematic categories can be identified based on observations, comments, and experiences.

Buckeye Middle School

1. Strong Community and Student Voice

• Themes: Student leadership, pride, and community identity.

Explanation: Buckeye Middle School fosters a strong sense of community, with students actively involved in leadership roles, such as conducting school tours and advocating for their school. Students' sense of pride is evident in their discussions about the historical significance of their school and its impact on their families. The student-driven culture highlights a commitment to leadership, advocacy, and engagement.

2. Innovative Programming and Academic Opportunities

• Themes: Career Technical Education (CTE) and wraparound services.

Explanation: Buckeye stands out as one of two middle schools in the district offering CTE programs, showcasing opportunities for students to engage in career readiness. The presence of wraparound services, including partnerships with Nationwide Children's Hospital, YMCA of Central Ohio, and "I Know I Can," further enriches students' educational experience and underscores the school's innovative approach to holistic student support.

3. Facilities and Accessibility Challenges

• Themes: Outdated infrastructure, lack of ADA compliance, and space limitations.

Explanation: Despite the school's vibrant culture, the building presents opportunities for improvement. Structural concerns, outdated classrooms, lack of ADA compliance, and deteriorating conditions such as cracks and inadequate hallways raise urgent questions about the building's viability. While some spaces, such as the cafeteria and gym, have seen minor upgrades, the overall state of the infrastructure limits the school's ability to meet student needs fully.

4. Future Uncertainty and Community Concerns

• Themes: Potential relocation, maintaining community identity, and serving diverse needs.

Explanation: Buckeye's potential closure or relocation raises significant concerns about maintaining the South Side's only traditional middle school. The community is concerned about preserving the school's identity and ensuring that the comprehensive wraparound services and positive culture can transition to a new space. Additionally, there is uncertainty about integrating middle and high school students into a combined building.
