Get to Know Canvas
Canvas is Columbus City Schools' new learning management system (LMS) for students, parents, and staff across all grades, and the platform serves as a “one-stop-shop” for all things instructional in the District.
Using Canvas, teachers can collaborate to deliver high-quality, student-centered learning experiences. Canvas allows each student’s learning to be managed in one central place, including accessing information, submitting assignments, and communicating with their teacher. In addition to student and teacher-related features, parents can observe and access their child’s classroom experience.
Students and families can find additional CCS Canvas information and resources by visiting the CCS Student & Family Canvas Resources page.

Canvas Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is Canvas?
Canvas is a district-wide learning management system (LMS) that helps enhance and accelerate instruction in CCS. The LMS allows for seamless engagement and collaboration between teachers and students, the ability to quickly deliver and grade assignments, and create a one-stop virtual classroom hub.
-
How do students and parents access Canvas?
Canvas can be accessed through the Clever dashboard or by downloading the Canvas Parent App from the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
-
How do I access my student’s Parent/Observer Account?
For parents to "connect" with their student's account, the student must generate a Pairing Code. Codes can also be found in their Canvas student account settings. If a second parent wants to access, a second pairing code must be generated by the student.
-
Do I need to create a new Observer account each school year?
No. Once you have paired your student to your account, you will be able to see their courses every year.
-
If I have multiple students, do I need to create multiple accounts?
No. Additional students can be linked to a single Observer account, but you will need to generate a new Pairing Code associated with the new student.
-
I am new to CCS. How do I get a pairing code?
Please follow the steps in our "Canvas Quick Start Guide: Observer Accounts."
-
If I’m a CCS employee, can I use my district email and single sign-on to create my Parent/Observer Account?
Employees are encouraged to use personal emails when creating their Observer account.
-
Will Canvas replace Google Classroom?
Yes. While Google Classroom offers similar features, Canvas offers students and teachers more creativity, personalization, and the ability to embed resources tailored to classroom needs and learning styles.
-
Is Canvas replacing Infinite Campus?
No. Infinite Campus is a Student Information System (SIS) that tracks enrollments, daily attendance, grades, transcripts, and serves as a database for student demographics. Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) that gets its course and enrollment data from Infinite Campus. Canvas provides a more detailed look at your student’s assignment details, view teacher feedback, and makes it easy to communicate with teachers.
-
Who do I contact if I have questions about my student or observer account?
Please contact your student's teacher(s).
-
How do I manage notifications in my Canvas observer account?
You can receive Canvas notifications for the courses you are observing. Notifications are sent to Canvas contact methods listed in your account “User Settings.”
Canvas includes a set of default notification settings. However, you can change the defaults of your notification settings. You can select one of four delivery frequency options for each notification type:
- Notify me right away
- Daily summary
- Weekly summary
- Don't send

Where can I find additional Canvas-related resources?
