• Transitioning from Early Intervention to Preschool Special Education

  • As your child approaches age three, Columbus City Schools is here to support a smooth and caring transition from Early Intervention (Part C) to Preschool Special Education (Part B). This important step ensures that children with special needs continue to receive the services and supports they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
    Here’s what families can expect:
    • Planning Together: Beginning as early as 9 months before your child’s 3rd birthday, your Early Intervention team will work with you to create a transition plan.
    • Transition Meeting: At least 90 days before your child turns three, a Transition Planning Conference is held. With your permission, Columbus City Schools and other programs you choose (like Head Start) may attend to discuss options.
    • Evaluation & Eligibility: If you and the team believe your child may qualify for preschool special education, the school district will complete an evaluation—with your consent.
    • Next Steps: If eligible, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be written and services will begin by your child’s 3rd birthday. If your child is not eligible, your team will connect you to other community resources such as preschool, Head Start, or playgroups.
We want families to feel informed and supported every step of the way. You also have important parent rights and safeguards that protect you and your child throughout this process.
If you have questions or would like support with your child’s transition, please contact our Early Childhood Education office at 614-365-5204.
