Media Guidelines
-
Columbus City Schools values its relationship with the media and is committed to sharing important stories and events. At the same time, we are focused on keeping our students safe and ensuring their learning is not disrupted. To help us do both, please follow these guidelines:
1. Media Inquiries
All media requests should go through the Communications Department, specifically the Executive Director of Communications.
Exception: Routine coverage of athletics or extracurriculars can be directed to the Director of Student Activities.2. Visits to School Property
Before visiting any CCS school or facility, the media must get approval from the Communications Department.
Unscheduled visits are not allowed. Media will be asked to leave and contact the Communications Department for next steps.3. Filming, Photography & Interviews
Media may take photos, record video, or conduct interviews on school property only with approval from the Communications Department and the school’s building administrator.
Cameras and reporters are only allowed in classrooms if:
- The school administrator, teacher and staff have been notified in advance.
- The visit will not disrupt learning.
4. Student Privacy
Under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act):
- Group shots of students must be checked against the district’s Consent Release of Student Information Form.
- No student may be interviewed without written parent/guardian permission.
- A Communications Department representative must be present during all student interviews.
5. Media Alerts & Press Releases
The Communications Department regularly shares updates and press announcements.
