Superintendent's Community Facilities Task Force Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why now?
The District is maximizing the opportunity for our students and being good stewards of our tax dollars.
-
Will the District consider more than one of the scenarios presented by the Task Force?
The District might consider more than one plan from the Task Force. But we're waiting to hear from the community first. We want to know what you think before making any decisions. Some scenarios have multiple options to consider, and some scenarios cannot happen together.
-
What happens next? What are the next steps?
The Task Force will review all feedback from the community. Using a QR code, you can share your thoughts in person at community forums or online. After that, the Task Force will make a recommendation to the District. The District will then review and share the recommendation with the Board of Education.
-
Don’t these scenarios affect students and families of color more?
No, the plans are based on the schools' needs, not who goes to them. Our goal is to do what's best for all students.
-
Will this negatively impact students’ mental health or friendships?
We want to keep students together with their friends, even if their school closes. We'll also ensure they have the support they need because we recognize that social and emotional needs are important.
-
Will this make transportation worse?
If any schools close, we'll make sure families still have a way to get to school.
-
Will there be layoffs? Will there be fewer teachers, principals, and other staff?
We don't expect to cut staff if schools close. We still need to help the same number of students.
-
When will these changes happen?
Once the Board of Education approves recommendations, they won't happen before the 2025-2026 school year. It might take a few years to make all the changes.
-
Will students leave the District?
We want to ensure that students get a good education, improve our buildings so they're better for learning, and offer programs that families want and deserve.
-
Will more than one plan happen?
We asked the task force for different ideas. They will use the community's feedback to choose the best plan.
-
Will there be more than one plan?
The final decision will be based on what the community wants. After that, the Board of Education will decide.
-
Why close schools if the city is growing?
We're trying to ensure students have good places to learn. Some of our buildings are old and need a lot of money to keep them safe. We want to use our money to help students learn better. According to the United Way, the city is growing, but not in terms of families moving into it.
-
What happens when buildings close?
We don’t have any plans for closed buildings yet.
-
Did you trick voters about closing schools?
No. We shared our plans to combine buildings at the Board of Education meeting in September 2023.
-
Will classes be bigger?
No, the state has strict rules about how many students can be in a classroom. Class sizes will not increase.
