Virtual Credit Advancement Program

  • The Division of Alternative Education is excited to present the continued renovation of the Virtual Credit Advancement Program.  This state-of-the-art programming is a result of a task force which involved business leaders, city officials, higher education partners, teachers, counselors and school administration.  Dr. Danielle E. Bomar, our Supervisor of Alternative Education, will continue to work with the program for the prospering Virtual Credit Advancement Program (VCAP).  VCAP has been redesigned, utilizing refreshed learning measures with a focus on accountability. High Schools for the 2019-20 school year will continue to have Content Area Teachers supervising the work of their students at their individual schools.  The VCAP program is a vital avenue for our students who thrive in non-traditional educational environments.

Columbus City Schools (CCS) offers expanded learning opportunities for all CCS eligible students through our distance learning program, Virtual Credit Advancement Program (VCAP).  Expanded high school course offerings taught by highly qualified, certificated teachers are available to students, grades 9-12, who wish to earn credit toward graduation by an alternative means.  Eligible students must be enrolled in the Columbus City Schools district and be 14-21 years of age; but have not earned enough credits to graduate from high school.

CCS-VCAP enables students to complete their high school diploma requirements online choosing from a full complement of courses for enrichment; including courses in: literature, history, science, mathematics, physical education, foreign languages, technology, the arts and health.  Whether students need to make up missed credits, repeat courses, take courses in advance and/or balance school with other responsibilities, CCS-VCAP can be a great alternative.

CCS-VCAP serves three groups of students:  (1) Full-Time Students; (2) Part-Time Students; and (3) School-Based Students.  (1) Full-Time students utilize VCAP outside of the traditional school-house hours at the Columbus Downtown High School.  Full-time VCAP students must attend the Columbus Downton High School 15 hours per week.  In addition, students enrolled in VCAP on a full-time and part-time basis have access to all extracurricular and co-curricular activities available to traditional students.  (2) Part-Time Students utilize VCAP during the school day as a class period course or in conjunction with other educational options.   (3) School-Based Students utilize VCAP at their home school working with VCAP instructors during the day and/or after school.  Principals receive biweekly reports to monitor the progress of their VCAP students while participating in all three VCAP enrollment opportunities.

Academic achievement is the desired outcome for all students participating in VCAP. Students enrolled in VCAP will achieve individually-established academic goals so that they are prepared for their next level of learning, and will graduate prepared for the college of their choice, military or the workforce. Accordingly, students will demonstrate proficiency in: Spanish, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Technology, Writing and the Arts.

The 2016-17 VCAP Survey data and a review of the VCAP courses by CCS Curriculum representatives reflected a need to increase the rigor of VCAP courses offered.  An initial review in 2017 and re-alignment of all VCAP courses was completed in 2017 (that led to the practice of ongoing annual reviews and re-alignments) resulted in a higher level of rigor for all VCAP courses.  In addition, the aforementioned survey highlighted a need to increase the number of academic electives resulting in the addition of 10 new academic elective courses in 2017-18 with an additional English Language Arts Elective course available for the upcoming 2019-20 school year.
