July 17, 2024 — Eager young artists in the Columbus City Schools (CCS) Summer Experience Visual Arts Pathway are immersing themselves in the vibrant galleries of the Columbus Museum of Art. The program, designed to immerse students in a pathway of their choosing, has taken them on a series of enriching visits to notable cultural institutions, where each piece of artwork opens a new realm of possibilities.

"To be able to do that along with their teachers, friends, and artists they are working with just makes the experience for the four weeks even more significant."

The Columbus Museum of Art visit provided an invaluable opportunity for students to explore diverse artistic styles and mediums. From classic masterpieces by artists like Claude Monet to beautifully crafted contemporary works by Robin F. Williams, exposure to such a wide range of art forms has sparked curiosity and passion among young scholars.

"When you see [students] look at a work of art, and you see that wow factor, it's exciting," said Columbus Museum of Art Volunteer Lisa Gilton. "I am a Columbus City Schools graduate. I came to this museum as a child and remember the wow factor. If I can be a part of giving that to another child, I think that is a win."

By interacting with the exhibits, participating in guided tours, and engaging in interactive workshops, students gain a deeper appreciation for the arts and are encouraged to express themselves creatively. To see something they could not have imagined, to stand in front of a textured painting, and to see how dreams can come true. The levels and tactile experiences of art come to life for these students, and they pass through each exhibit.

"For [students] to see that there are various textures of art opens them up to more than just the crayons and markers," said Hensley. "They will know when I see a tree outside; it doesn't have to be drawn. I can build it using magnets or paper. The different types of materials available on display help open them up when they're thinking of creating art."

The impact of the Visual Arts Pathway goes beyond individual artistic development. It fosters community and shared learning among these students, allowing for an environment of collaboration and creative expression to continue to be celebrated within the District.

As the CCS Summer Experience Visual Arts Pathway continues, it stands as a testament to the power of education and the arts in shaping young minds. By providing students with opportunities to explore and create, the pathway ignites a passion for learning and instills an imagination that will last a lifetime.
