Community Donation Supports Young Bankers Club at Woodcrest
November 29, 2021 -- To celebrate its partnership with Woodcrest Elementary School, Fifth Third Bank in Central Ohio has given the District’s only year-round school a $10,000 check to expand financial literacy for all fifth graders.
“We like to start them young,” said Sheldon Johnson, Vice President Community, and Economic Development for Fifth Third Bank in Central Ohio. “Learning the basic principles of money sets that student up for success.”
Fifth Third offers a financial education program called the Young Bankers Club. Most of the math lessons are online. The eight-week program has been offered to fifth grade students at Woodcrest during the spring quarter for years. Even during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, students participated in online lessons.
“The Young Bankers program teaches students basic money skills such as spending, saving, and investing,” said Rosalind Parker, the math coach at Woodcrest. “The program also helps students with basic math operations including fractions, measurements, data, and geometry.”
This is the first year Fifth Third Bank of Central Ohio has ever presented a check to a school that participates in the Young Bankers Club.
“The pandemic made us so aware of the needs of many of our schools in the community,” said Johnson. “Hopefully this money can help educators buy technology.”
Woodcrest will take the next few weeks to decide how best to invest the $10,000 providing another lesson to students and teachers on how to increase the value of your investments.
“I am so excited and appreciative of this technology grant from Fifth Third Bank,” Woodcrest Principal Yolanda Cooper said. “Woodcrest has a longstanding partnership with Fifth Third. Together our community partners are helping us provide useful, lifelong financial literacy to our future leaders and families.”
