Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS)
-
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support and is mandated in the state of Ohio. PBIS is a research-based framework that encourages schools to create a positive, predictable, and safe learning environment to ensure success for all students.
The focus of PBIS is
- prevention, not punishment
- acknowledging students for consistent positive behavior
- e-teaching expectations while providing support to individual students as needed
At its heart, PBIS calls on schools to teach students positive behavior strategies, just as they would teach about any other subject—like reading or math. PBIS recognizes that students can only meet behavioral expectations if they know what the expectations are.
PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation.
Each school develops a set of expectations that are taught to all students to create a common language. These expectations are the same for all students and staff in all areas of the school, including zoom meetings, playground, lunchroom, classroom, and bus.
At Gables our PBIS expectations are:
- Be Responsible
- Be Respectful
- Be Safe
- Be Kind
Overall, PBIS is an approach to create a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.
