Governor Urges Student-Athletes to Get Vaccinated
June 18, 2021 -- Governor Mike DeWine was joined today by athletic coaches and student-athletes from various schools in Central Ohio, including Columbus City Schools, encouraging high school athletes to get vaccinated.
Calling it the ticket to a full season, DeWine said vaccinated student-athletes will be able to focus on the competitive play and all that goes with it instead of worrying about testing positive for COVID-19.
Independence High School Athletic Director Jacob Ramsey II and Independence basketball student-athlete Christian Byrd participated in the press conference with Governor DeWine, who admitted vaccination rates are slowing and lagging significantly in some areas of the state. The vaccination process began last week for Ohioans between the ages of 12 and 17.
The executive director of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and Ohio’s Chief Medical Officer said vaccinating yourself is the best way to protect yourself.
