Devonshire Students Explore Nature -- Even During Virtual Learning
October 1, 2020 -- As Columbus school educators continue to rise up in this remote learning environment, one elementary school teacher is using "no screen time" to teach her kindergarteners a virtual lesson.
The science lesson about butterflies and the color orange may have started out using Zoom in Amy Boyd’s Devonshire elementary school classroom, but it didn’t end that way.
“We asked the children to turn off their computers and go outside to create and learn,” said kindergarten teacher Amy Boyd.
Geri Granger, the Pre K-12 Education Coordinator from the Spruce Run Environmental Study Center, the district’s nature center, was the special guest and guide for Boyd’s science lesson.
Ms. Granger talked to the kindergarten class about nature and how to learn from it.
“The timing was perfect. I had just released a Monarch butterfly at the Study Center earlier in the day. Since the release was captured on video, I showed the clip to the students right before they went outside,” said Geri Granger.
The kindergartners had one assignment. Observe, touch and collect materials to create a Nature Face - a self-portrait using twigs, flowers, grass, rocks, leaves, acorns, you name it.
Some of Ms. Boyd’s students were so proud of their nature faces, they emailed her to share.
“When I saw the happiness in their creations and pride in their beaming smiles, I was so happy to be their teacher. My students are connecting nature to life and happiness. There is nothing better than that,” said Amy Boyd.
