Columbus City Schools Board of Education Statement Regarding CEA 10-Day Strike Notice
Jennifer Adair, Board of Education President:
After 19 days of contract negotiations that began in March, the Board is disappointed that CEA did not vote on the Board’s contract offer, but instead the CEA legislative assembly voted to issue a 10-day strike notice. The Board’s offer is fair, comprehensive, and respectful, and we had hoped our teachers would carefully consider it.
A strike is disruptive and hurts our students most, especially after everything they have experienced over the last few years. And that is why our team is well prepared for an alternate opening should a strike actually take place. Our students' academic progress and social emotional well-being will remain our top priorities.
We understand that CEA also has publicly indicated a desire to continue negotiating. As explained in the Board’s unfair labor practice charge, we remain deeply concerned that CEA has not bargained in good faith. The Board will continue to approach these negotiations committed to a resolution and will discuss with the federal mediator what steps are most beneficial moving forward.
