CCS Celebrates 101 Years of Partnership With Columbus Rotary at Colerain Elementary School
December 20, 2021 - Students and staff at Colerain Elementary School enjoyed a fun-filled morning during the Columbus Rotary’s 101st Children’s Celebration Friday. The Columbus Rotary has been a proud partner, serving students with orthopedic and health impairments in Columbus City Schools for over 100 years, and has been hosting a Colerain Holiday Party on the last day of school before winter break for decades.
Columbus Rotary President Amanda Bowen said they planned a special “100 years” celebration for December 2020, but had to cancel due to COVID -19. Instead of a party, Rotarians delivered computer tablet carrying cases for every Colerain student.
Columbus Rotary undoubtedly made up for missing last year’s party this year. Students were greeted by dancing Koalas, played games, colored pictures, enjoyed holiday music courtesy of Whetstone High School's band and orchestra, and of course met Santa, who brought each child a special gift and Build-a-Bear Koala stuffed animal. In addition, Bowen presented a $1,500 check to the school for student supports.
“We are just so thankful for this partnership,” said Principal Candace Nespeca. “Through all life’s inconsistencies, especially the last couple of years with the pandemic, Columbus Rotary has been our constant support. They always come back, and for that, we are truly grateful.”
Founded in 1912 and nearly 300 members strong, Columbus Rotary is one of the oldest and largest Rotary Clubs in the world. Rotary’s service to children with orthopedic and health impairments started in 1919 and was influential in having state laws enacted to provide care, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and education for families in need.
“We are planning more projects with Colerain throughout 2022,” Bowen said.
