CCS, City of Columbus and Columbus Music Commission Give Back to Columbus Community Through Gift of Music
September 15, 2020 -- Stored in a warehouse ready to make sound sit gently used and new instruments, drums, strings, and keyboards: musical instruments donated by various organizations, and community members encouraging students to give back to their Columbus community through the gift of music.
“Music does not stop in a pandemic,” said Unified Arts Supervisor Dr. Betty Hill. “The arts are more important during a pandemic than ever. It is a way to express how we feel, it is a way to express what we are seeing.”
For the past several years, Columbus City Schools has continued its partnership with the City of Columbus and the Columbus Music Commission growing its Gift of Music initiative.
Dr. Betty Hill, the District's Unified Arts Supervisor, says this initiative helps provide instruments to students for free that have a desire to participate in music programs across Columbus City Schools.
“Music literacy is so important, students are able to connect with education in different ways,” Hill says. “Music can be their avenue to engage in education, but also another way for them to find a home away from home and for a lot of students that is really essential.”
The instruments are currently being disinfected and will then get distributed to schools based on need.
