Columbus Gifted Academy Student James Oram Wins 2020 District Middle School Chess Tournament
Feb. 27, 2020 -- Columbus Gifted Academy student James Oram (left, playing in the championship match above) won the 2020 District Middle School Chess Tournament on Wednesday, February 26, edging out Dominion's Evan Bender in the championship match. Oram, Bender, and six other finalists competed in a bracketed tournament after qualifying from the morning preliminary rounds, which featured over 75 students from the District's various middle schools.
Aquiles Zorrilla Garcia won the third-place match over Miguel Munoz Ramirez in an all-Columbus Global Academy consolation contest.
The other qualifiers in the championship bracket were Azavier Johnston (Africentric), Owen McClure (Columbus Gifted Academy), Pau Lam Khai (Woodward Park) and Bilal Houndito (Woodward Park).
Equally as important, CCS staff also recognized Sportsmanship Award winners from the day: Bender, Johnston, and Niveca Ricks (Champion).
The event took place at the King Arts Complex and was sponsored by the CCS Gifted and Talented Department. The students participated in the preliminary rounds from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. before breaking and returning for the finals in the afternoon.
