Superintendent’s Message to the CCS Community - April 6, 2020
Hello, Columbus City Schools. This is Superintendent Talisa Dixon with a message for our school community as we begin the first week of our Online Academy. New learning begins today, and I am excited about the possibilities it holds for our students.
Last week, Governor DeWine extended the statewide closure of schools through May 1. Many states across the country have closed schools for the remainder of the academic year, and while no decisions have been made, we know there is a good chance Ohio will do the same in the coming weeks.
This is why we felt it was important for our Academic Services team to take the time to create a long-term plan for remote learning. Our school buildings may be closed, but learning must continue for all of our students.
If you have not already read through the information about the CCS Online Academy, I encourage you to visit StaySafeCCS.org to see the full details. Teachers will be assigning required work to students through the online learning platforms according to grade level and subject area.
Our teachers and our staff have high expectations for all students to remain engaged with our virtual learning opportunities. I ask that our families match those expectations and partner with us in keeping students focused and on-task through the remainder of this extended closure.
Student Email Accounts
With the launch of the Online Academy, we have also activated new school email accounts for every CCS student. Students will be able to use their new email address to connect with their teachers, principals, and school support staff about online assignments, coursework, and other school-related activities. Visit our website for information on how to log in.
Internet Access
We understand that reliable internet access is a barrier for a number of our families. We are committed to finding creative solutions to help families overcome this barrier. We hope to have more information in the coming days on how to access Wi-Fi signals around the city or hot-spot devices for access at home. We do not have all of the solutions at the moment, but please know we are working on it.
Graduation Requirements
As I mentioned in my message last week, I will be recommending to the Board of Education that we roll back our graduation requirements to the state minimum for the Class of 2020. This would eliminate requirements for a technology course credit, an additional elective course credit, and 120 internship hours.
Students who were on track to graduate at the end of the third quarter WILL remain on track through the end of the year. Students who were not on track can satisfy the requirements through online coursework during the closure.
School counselors and support staff will be reaching out to seniors to advise them of their graduation status.
Board of Education Meeting
Finally, I encourage you to tune in to Facebook Live to watch our board meeting on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. We will hear presentations from our Academic Services, Operations, and Information Technology teams. These presentations will give our community an update on the efforts we have been making during this crisis situation.
Thank you to the entire CCS community for supporting our school district, our students, and their families. As we move forward into our new online learning environment, I encourage everyone to stay focused, stay engaged, and most importantly stay safe.
