School Realignment
-
Columbus City Schools (CCS) is implementing a realignment plan to ensure every student learns in a strong, modern school environment with the programs and support they need to succeed.
By combining our under-enrolled schools and creating regional learning communities with clear grade bands, CCS can offer more classes, activities, and opportunities for every student. The realignment plan is scheduled to begin during the 2026–2027 school year with Broadleigh and Moler Elementary. It will continue in phases, always guided by our focus on instruction, equity, and community voice. This is an investment in our students, our families, and the future of Columbus.
Long-Term Vision for Learning Communities
- We envision 10-12 strong learning communities across the city, centered around 1-2 high schools in each region.
- Each high school will host two or more career pathway academies, expanding college and career options.
- While school choice remains important, every student deserves access to a strong neighborhood school, especially students with exceptional needs and English learners.
- Universal Pre-K is a central part of the vision, ensuring every child starts with a strong foundation.
Facility Alignment & Enrollment
- To maximize opportunities, schools will transition to standardized grade bands:
- PreK-5 or K-5 (minimum 600 students)
- Grades 6-8 (minimum 800 students)
- Grades 9-12 (minimum 1,200 students)
- Right-sizing schools ensures robust program offerings in academics, athletics, and extracurriculars.
- Larger high school enrollment supports more competitive athletic divisions, giving students greater visibility with scouts and scholarship opportunities.
Phased Realignment Plan
- Phase I (2026-2027): Broadleigh and Moler Elementary schools will cease instruction, with new boundaries established in partnership with families.
- Phase II (2027-2028): Relocation of Columbus Alternative High School from the McGuffy site.
- Phase III (2027-2028 and beyond): Buckeye Middle School realignment, with community planning around Marion-Franklin and the South region.
- West Broad Elementary School: Replacement contingent on capital funding, with a projected 3-year construction timeline once funds are secured.
Community Engagement & Process
- This is a long-term vision; it took time to get here, and it will take time to make it a reality.
- CCS is committed to two-way communication and community involvement throughout the process.
- Families, staff, and community partners will help shape boundaries, school transitions, and career pathways.
- Families will also have access to a Preferential Lottery process before the general lottery, giving them time and flexibility to make the best decision for their child.
- Every realignment process includes a two=year transition period, which involved family meetings, peer connections, preferential lotteries, and the memorialization of closing schools.
-
We know change can feel overwhelming, and we want families to know you won’t go through it alone. As schools transition, Columbus City Schools is committed to making the process smooth, supportive, and student-centered.
-
For Students:
Your child will have opportunities to meet new friends through buddy programs, orientation events, and family nights at their new school. Counselors and wellness staff will also be available to support them during the transition. Transportation will continue to be provided.
-
For Families:
You’ll be invited to open houses, school tours, and information sessions to get to know your new school community and stay connected throughout the process. Families who wish to explore other options will also have access to a Preferential Lottery process before the general lottery, giving you more time and flexibility to make the best choice for your child.
-
For Staff:
Teachers and staff will be supported through placement assistance, professional development, and communication, with a focus on maintaining strong relationships between students and educators.
-
Our goal is to ensure that every student feels welcomed, supported, and ready to learn on their first day in their new school.
